Common Mistakes When Adjusting the Temperature

High exterior temperatures can be frustrating for anyone. The most common reaction is to set the air conditioning to the lowest possible temperature upon entering an air-conditioned space.

However, this can be a mistake for several reasons.

First, very low temperatures can harm your health.

Second, the lower the temperature, the higher the energy consumption, leading to higher electricity bills.

Therefore, experts recommend that the minimum temperature for air conditioning should be 21 degrees Celsius, while the ideal range is between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius.

Frequent Mistakes When Setting the Temperature

There are several common mistakes people make with air conditioning, both when setting the temperature and in general usage. Here are the most frequent ones. Take note and avoid them!

  1. Setting the Temperature Below 21 Degrees Celsius
  • As mentioned earlier, setting the temperature too low is not advisable due to potential health risks and higher energy consumption. Forcing the system to maintain a very low temperature can strain the unit. Additionally, the difference between the outside and inside temperatures should not exceed 12 degrees Celsius.
  1. Leaving the Unit On All Day
  • This is only recommended if people are constantly present in the space. If no one is around, it’s essential to either turn off the air conditioner or set the temperature closer to the outside temperature.
  1. Leaving Doors or Windows Open
  • Leaving windows or doors open in air-conditioned spaces results in higher energy usage and makes it harder to cool the room. The air conditioner will work harder to cool the incoming warm air from outside, which can also cause condensation on cold surfaces.
  1. Using the Wrong Size Unit
  • Each space requires an appropriately sized air conditioning unit. Installing an overly large unit in a small space or a small unit in a large space will not provide optimal efficiency. It’s best to consult with an expert to ensure you get the right unit for your needs.

Improving Air Conditioner Performance

Here are some simple tips to enhance the performance and extend the lifespan of your air conditioner:

  1. Clean the Filters Regularly
  • While air conditioning units don’t require extensive maintenance, it’s advisable to clean the filters periodically. Depending on environmental conditions, this can be once a year or every six months.
  1. Check the Drains
  • It’s normal for an air conditioner to expel some water due to the condensation process. However, if it leaks excessive water inside, check for blockages in the drains.
  1. Ensure It Doesn’t Emit Strange Noises
  • A well-maintained air conditioner should not produce unusual noises. If it does, there might be an internal issue such as a lack of refrigerant or oil. In such cases, it’s best to call a technician.

By avoiding these common mistakes and following these maintenance tips, you can ensure your air conditioner runs efficiently and provides a comfortable environment while keeping energy consumption and costs in check.
